About Yueya Quan
Yueya Quan (Crescent Moon Spring) is a natural oasis of crescent-shaped water nestled between sand dunes near Dunhuang. The spring has existed for approximately 2,000 years, defying logic by maintaining its water level despite being surrounded by the moving sands of the Gobi Desert. The spring is 100 meters long and 25 meters wide, with clear water reflecting the sky and surrounding dunes.
The oasis is surrounded by traditional Chinese buildings — temples, pavilions, and gardens — that create a surreal landscape of water, architecture, and desert. The spring has been a vital water source for travelers on the Silk Road for centuries, and today it's one of Dunhuang's most photographed sites. Visitors can walk around the spring, climb the adjacent Mingsha Shan for views, or simply sit and enjoy the peaceful contrast of water and sand.
