About Pingyao City Wall
Pingyao City Wall is one of China's best-preserved ancient city walls, originally built in the 14th century during the Ming Dynasty with a circumference of 6.4 kilometers. The wall stands 10 meters tall and features 72 watchtowers and 6 gate towers. Walking the complete circuit offers panoramic views of the ancient city within and the surrounding countryside beyond — a rare experience of experiencing a complete Ming Dynasty fortification.
The wall was built with a rammed earth core faced with bricks, and features a moat, drawbridges, and defensive structures. The 72 watchtowers are said to represent Confucius's 72 disciples. Each of the 6 gates has a unique character and offers different views. The wall is wide enough for two vehicles to pass, and the entire circuit takes about 1.5-2 hours to walk. It's particularly beautiful at sunset when the ancient city and surrounding landscape are bathed in golden light.
