About Pingyao Ancient City

Pingyao Ancient City is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of China's best-preserved ancient walled cities, with a history spanning 2,700 years. The city's layout, streets, shops, temples, and courtyard houses remain largely intact from the Ming and Qing dynasties, offering an authentic glimpse into traditional Chinese urban life.

The city covers 2.25 square kilometers within its walls, with a grid pattern of streets that hasn't changed in centuries. The main thoroughfare, Nan Dajie (South Street), was once China's financial center, lined with draft banks, merchant houses, and shops. Today, many buildings have been converted into museums, guesthouses, and restaurants, but the architectural character remains authentic. The city is home to over 4,000 traditional courtyard houses, many still inhabited by local residents. At night, the city is illuminated with red lanterns, creating a magical atmosphere.
