About Yu Garden
Yu Garden (Yuyuan) is one of China's finest classical gardens, built in 1559 during the Ming Dynasty by a government official named Pan Yunduan as a retreat for his father. The garden covers 2 hectares but contains an astonishing variety of landscapes β rockeries, ponds, pavilions, corridors, and courtyards arranged to create an infinite sense of depth and surprise.
Every element has symbolic meaning. The famous Exquisite Jade Rock, a 5-meter-tallε€ͺζΉη³ (Taihu stone) with 72 holes, was brought from Lake Tai specifically for this garden. The dragon walls with their colorful scales separate different garden sections, while covered walkways frame carefully composed views. Despite being in the heart of Shanghai, the garden creates a world of tranquility and contemplation.
What Not to Miss
The Exquisite Jade Rock, the garden's centerpiece β a naturally sculpted stone with holes that supposedly allow smoke to pass through.
The Sansui Hall (Hall of Three Ears), the main reception hall with traditional Ming Dynasty furniture.
The Inner Garden, a separate smaller garden with its own entrance (additional fee) β quieter and more intimate.
