About The Great Wall at Mutianyu
The Mutianyu section of the Great Wall stretches for 2.3 kilometers through rugged mountain terrain, featuring 23 watchtowers that once served as military lookout posts. Built during the Ming Dynasty, it is one of the best-preserved sections of the wall, with original brickwork and crenellations still intact.
Unlike the more crowded Badaling section, Mutianyu offers a more peaceful hiking experience. The surrounding mountains are covered in forests that turn brilliant shades of red and gold in autumn, creating one of the most scenic stretches of the entire wall.
What Not to Miss
The cable car ride to the top offers stunning views of the wall snaking through the mountains — worth the extra cost.
Tower 14 to Tower 20 provides the most dramatic views, with steep climbs and panoramic vistas stretching for miles.
The toboggan ride down is a unique way to descend — slide along the track for a thrilling return to the base.
