For centuries, people have dreamed of the Jiangnan water towns, and over a thousand years, Suzhou has become synonymous with that vision. It is the crown jewel of the region—a place of misty, poetic landscapes, lush fields, tranquil villages, and classical gardens that frame the beauty of Taihu Lake. Three thousand years of Suzhou read like a chronicle of romance and grace. Even without the status of a provincial capital, its radiance has never been dimmed. This is a city of effortless beauty, favored by history itself. It holds the most exquisite gardens, the most delicate Kunqu opera and pingtan ballads, and the softest, sweetest dialect in the land. To step into Suzhou is to truly step into the Jiangnan of your dreams.
Recently, I heard that the Suzhou Industrial Park was hosting some genuinely fun events—the "Suzhou at 8:30" and the "Extraordinary Park Nights" series. The Suzhou I knew had always felt gentle and traditional, so the idea of such a modern nightlife scene was intriguing. My best friend and I decided to meet there for a trip. In just three short days, Suzhou struck me with its blend of refinement, charm, atmosphere, and the collision of ancient and modern. It was a revelation—a modern, stylish, yet still tender Jiangnan experience.
**Night Cruise on Jinji Lake – Shadows, Lights, and Ripples in Twilight**
As dusk settled, I loved the quiet of that moment. A waning moon hung high in the southwest sky, a few cold stars scattered nearby, and clouds edged in black gave the heavens a solemn elegance. By night, Jinji Lake is steeped in the old symbols of Jiangnan, where nostalgia and innovation coexist, and heritage echoes through modernity. It’s traditional yet bold, civilized yet open—just like the Suzhou people themselves: reserved, unhurried, and peaceful. That’s the true charm of this city. What looks like a landscape of water and hills is really a harmony between heaven and humanity. Ancient alleys, serene gardens, and the lively, bustling nightlife of Suzhou—this is the city’s soul, full of warmth and life.
We happened to catch the "Suzhou at 8:30 – Midsummer Night Cube" event, which helped us dive deeper into the city’s night. It showcased the magic of Suzhou after dark through six themes: night shows, night food, night shopping, night entertainment, night cruises, and night stays. To give the "Extraordinary Park Nights" a fresh spark, the Suzhou Ballet and the Suzhou Symphony Orchestra stepped out of their usual venues, moving the "Jinji Lake Concert Hall" outdoors. High art reached out to locals and visitors alike, breathing new life into the park and filling every street around Jinji Lake with a cultural fragrance that added a unique splash of color to the night.
One fresh highlight was Moonlight Pier, with its gentle curves and prime waterfront location. It blends the natural wit of Wu culture with the trendy, innovative spirit of a modern Suzhou, making it a shining beacon on the lake—a place where the shore meets paradise, bathed in moonlight.

At 7:30 in the evening, we boarded a cruise ship at Moonlight Pier to circle the lake and take in the beauty of Jinji Lake’s shores under the stars.

As night fell over the lake, the musical fountain, water-screen films, cruise boats, and the Ferris wheel came together in a dazzling display of sights and sounds.
A cool breeze drifted off the water, and the lakeshore was aglow with lights that shifted colors—grape purple, rose red, tangerine orange—like a giant celestial lantern resting on the shore, magnificent beyond words. The "Gate of the Orient" and Suzhou Center were stunning at night too, perfect for snapping a few beautiful shots.
In the distance, the Crowne Plaza Hotel, strung with rainbow lights, seemed to lie across the lake itself. Shadows, lights, and ripples mingled so seamlessly that you couldn’t tell where the embankment ended and the water began. Looking out, the entire lake was a painting of countless hues.
From afar, Jinji Lake connects to surrounding waterways through channels, a truly grand sight. Under the sunlight, the blue waves shimmered with a gentle, modern Jiangnan charm. At night, neon lights flickered, the breeze whispered, moonlight glowed softly, and the scenery was like a dream—different, yet equally enchanting.
**Huayi Brothers Movie World – Get That Stylish Blockbuster Shot**
No need to travel abroad for epic film vibes—Huayi Brothers Movie World has it all. This trip to Suzhou uncovered a hidden gem for photography lovers. The entire park is themed around films produced by Huayi Brothers, a paradise for movie buffs. It’s divided into five zones, each a heaven for shutterbugs: Republic-era charm, Japanese style, European flair, and ancient Chinese aesthetics. You could spend a whole day shooting here. If you love photography, trust me—you have to come!
The park’s entrance is a European-style castle, grand and impressive the moment you arrive.
**Starlight Avenue Zone:** Right past the gates, you’ll find the famous Starlight Avenue, Hollywood-style photo spots set against retro American architecture. Even the ads are styled to match the vintage vibe. Old New York buildings with classic billboards—perfect for some edgy, cinematic shots!
A pink food truck straight out of a teen dream adds instant scene immersion.
Film-themed signs and photos line the streets, making you feel like you’ve stepped into Hollywood itself. Time to live out that movie-star fantasy!
This place is a photographer’s dream. Just stand anywhere on the street, and you’ll feel like you’re on an American avenue, with shots that scream big-budget film.
There’s also a film workshop in this zone, though it was closed due to pandemic restrictions—we could only admire it from a distance.
**If You Are the One Zone:** My personal favorite. The streets are filled with adorable, playful attractions, especially a pink double-decker bus that’s made for photos. The whole area is romantic and cute, practically bursting with pink bubbles. It’s a dream come true for anyone with a soft spot for all things sweet!
**Assembly Zone:** Themed around the film *Assembly*, this zone recreates its scenes with Republic-era architecture, steeped in nostalgic red-and-gold sentiment. Easy to capture that classic 1930s Shanghai look!
I seriously regret not packing more outfits for different styles. Ladies, bring your props and wardrobe—you’ll want to shoot endlessly!
There’s a photo studio that recreates the old Shanghai feel, with peeling posters that carry the weight of time, making you appreciate the park’s attention to detail.
A Republic-era train station with a rickshaw parked out front instantly transports you into a melodrama—this is the unique experience only a movie world can offer.
That vintage train is beyond cute too, decorated with old celebrity posters from the last century. It’s remarkably authentic, like stepping onto a tram through old Shanghai.
Seriously, that tram is adorable—dark green body against brick walls, so retro, so Republic-era.
The quiet town feels frozen in time. Standing there in my white dress, I felt like a heroine from a classic era film.
**Tai Chi Zone:** This area features a live-action stunt show called *The Oddball’s Big Adventure*, with explosions, floods, and wire work. There are also thrilling interactive rides. Taking photos here offers its own unique kick.
The park also has outdoor climbing challenges with a big elastic net at the bottom—bouncy like a trampoline. Kids were having a blast, and it looked both risky and exhilarating.
These vintage buildings stand silently, waiting for visitors to hear their stories, quietly whispering tales of the past.
The weathered walls, heavy wooden doors, and that Gothic cathedral stand out vividly—you could almost imagine you’re abroad.
Those retro French villas carry a special kind of romance. The pale green houses are fresh and charming, and photos turn out beautifully.
Beyond what I’ve mentioned, Huayi Brothers Movie World has plenty more to explore: thrilling roller coasters, pendulums, an airport-themed area, a training camp, and even a Detective Dee mystery ride. It’s practically an amusement park set inside a film universe!
Plan to spend a full day here because the nighttime is even more spectacular. When the lights come on across every zone, it feels like you’ve stepped into a neon-lit Hollywood—absolutely dazzling.
