About Saint Sophia Cathedral
Saint Sophia Cathedral is a stunning example of Russian Orthodox architecture, built in 1907 during Harbin's period as a major hub of the Chinese Eastern Railway. The cathedral's distinctive green onion dome, red brick walls, and Byzantine-style arches make it one of the most photographed buildings in northeast China.
Originally serving the Russian community that settled in Harbin, the cathedral was later used as a warehouse during the Cultural Revolution. Today it houses a museum of architecture and art, though the interior is largely empty compared to its original grandeur. The exterior, however, remains magnificent and is especially beautiful when illuminated at night or dusted with snow in winter.
