About Pingjiang Road
Pingjiang Road is one of the oldest and best-preserved streets in Suzhou, following the course of a canal that has existed for over 2,500 years. The street runs 1.6 kilometers along the waterway, lined with traditional white-walled, black-tiled houses, small stone bridges, and ancient trees. This area was the heart of Suzhou's scholarly and merchant class during the Ming and Qing dynasties.
Today, Pingjiang Road is a vibrant cultural district where traditional Suzhou life continues alongside modern boutiques, teahouses, and cafes. You'll find locals washing clothes in the canal, playing chess in doorways, and practicing calligraphy in small studios. At the same time, the street is home to independent bookshops, artisan workshops, and restaurants serving traditional Suzhou cuisine. It's a living neighborhood, not a tourist reconstruction.
