About Nanputuo Temple
Nanputuo Temple is one of southern China's most important Buddhist temples, founded during the Tang Dynasty (9th century) and rebuilt multiple times over its 1,000-year history. The temple is dedicated to Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, and takes its name from Mount Potalaka, Guanyin's mythical dwelling place.
The temple complex climbs the slope of Wulao Peak (Five Old Men Peak), with traditional halls featuring red pillars, golden roofs, and intricate wood carvings. Incense smoke fills the air as worshippers pray, while the surrounding gardens and courtyards offer peaceful spaces for contemplation. Behind the temple, paths lead up the mountain to additional shrines and viewpoints overlooking Xiamen University and the sea.
