About Erhai Lake
Erhai Lake is a crystal-clear alpine lake surrounded by mountains, covering 250 square kilometers at an elevation of 1,972 meters. The lake's name means "Ear Sea" due to its shape, and it has been the lifeblood of the Bai people for over 2,000 years. Traditional fishing villages dot the shoreline, where fishermen still use cormorants — the ancient technique of training birds to catch fish.
Cycling around the lake is one of Dali's most popular activities, offering stunning views of Cangshan Mountain on one side and the lake on the other. The 130-kilometer circuit passes through rice paddies, orchards, and Bai villages where time seems to stand still. The water is remarkably clear, reflecting the sky and mountains like a mirror. Sunsets over the lake are spectacular, with colors changing as the sun dips behind the mountains.
