About Slender West Lake
Slender West Lake is Yangzhou's crown jewel — a 4.3-kilometer-long narrow lake that winds through the city like a silk ribbon. Unlike Hangzhou's West Lake, which is broad and expansive, Slender West Lake is intimate and graceful, with willow trees dipping into the water, classical pavilions perched on islands, and elegant stone bridges arching over narrow channels.
The lake has been celebrated in Chinese poetry for over a thousand years. The famous Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai wrote "烟花三月下扬州" (In March, amid flowers and mist, go to Yangzhou), capturing the lake's springtime beauty. The landscape was designed during the Qing Dynasty by wealthy salt merchants who created gardens, pavilions, and bridges along its banks. Today, the lake is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as part of the Grand Canal.
