About Yuelu Academy
Yuelu Academy is one of China's four great ancient academies, founded in 976 AD during the Song Dynasty and still operating as part of Hunan University today. For over 1,000 years, this academy has educated China's scholars, officials, and thinkers, making it one of the oldest continuously operating educational institutions in the world.
The academy is nestled at the foot of Yuelu Mountain, surrounded by ancient trees and traditional architecture. The buildings include lecture halls, libraries, gardens, and courtyards that reflect traditional Chinese academic architecture. Famous scholars including Zhu Xi (the "Confucius of the Song Dynasty") taught here, and the academy played a crucial role in the development of Neo-Confucianism. Today, visitors can explore the historic buildings, see ancient inscriptions, and understand the role of education in Chinese civilization.
