About Heavenly Lake of Tianshan
The Heavenly Lake of Tianshan (Tianchi) is a pristine alpine lake at 1,910 meters elevation in the Tianshan mountains, 110 kilometers east of Urumqi. The lake is surrounded by snow-capped peaks and dense spruce forests, creating a stunning reflection of mountains in crystal-clear water. Known as the "jewel of the Tianshan," the lake has been a sacred site for centuries.
The lake is 3.5 kilometers long and averages 40 meters deep, fed by melting snow from the surrounding peaks. Visitors can take boat rides on the lake, hike the surrounding trails, or simply enjoy the peaceful mountain scenery. The area is home to Kazakh herders who live in yurts during summer, offering cultural experiences alongside natural beauty. The drive from Urumqi through the Tianshan mountains is itself spectacular, with views of valleys, forests, and peaks.
