About Nanshan Temple
Nanshan Temple is China's southernmost Buddhist sanctuary, a massive temple complex built in 1998 on the coast of Sanya. The temple's centerpiece is the 108-meter Guanyin of the South Sea statue — one of the tallest statues in the world — rising from a platform in the sea, visible from miles away. The statue depicts Guanyin, the Bodhisattva of Compassion, in three aspects, each facing a different direction to bless the sea and land.
The temple complex covers 50 square kilometers of tropical coastline and includes traditional halls, gardens, and the world's largest Guanyin statue. The site combines Buddhist spirituality with natural beauty — tropical gardens, ocean views, and the sound of waves create a peaceful atmosphere. For Chinese Buddhists, this is a sacred southern pilgrimage site, while international visitors come for the spectacular statue and coastal scenery.
