Luoyang

Luoyang carries the weight of thirteen dynasties on its shoulders — one of China's most ancient capitals, where emperors ruled and Buddhism first entered the country through the White Horse Temple, China's first Buddhist temple. Though much of the ancient city has been lost to time, what remains reveals why this location, protected by mountains and rivers, served as imperial seat for over a thousand years.

The Longmen Grottoes stand as one of China's supreme artistic achievements — tens of thousands of Buddha statues carved into cliff walls over centuries, including colossal figures that rank among the world's most impressive ancient sculptures. Every spring, Luoyang erupts in color during the Peony Festival, when millions of flowers bloom across city parks, celebrating the flower that has symbolized the city since imperial times. The Shaolin Temple, birthplace of kung fu, sits nearby in the Song Mountains.
