About Mingsha Shan
Mingsha Shan (Echoing-Sand Mountain) is a massive sand dune near Dunhuang where the wind creates a musical booming sound — a phenomenon that has fascinated visitors for centuries. The mountain gets its name from the echoing sound produced when sand slides down the dune, resembling drums or thunder.
The dune rises 250 meters above the surrounding desert and offers spectacular views, especially at sunset when the sand glows golden-red. Visitors can climb the dune (about 30-40 minutes), try sandboarding down the slopes, or ride camels along the base. The adjacent Crescent Moon Spring creates a surreal contrast of water and sand. The site is particularly magical at sunset when the desert landscape is illuminated by warm light.
