About Chen Clan Ancestral Hall
Chen Clan Ancestral Hall is the finest example of Lingnan architecture in existence, built in 1894 as a collective ancestral temple for all Chen surname clans in Guangdong Province. What makes this building extraordinary is the level of decorative art — every available surface is covered in wood carvings, stone carvings, brick carvings, ceramic sculptures, and colorful glazed tiles depicting scenes from Chinese mythology, history, opera, and daily life.
The complex consists of 19 buildings arranged in a symmetrical layout with 6 courtyards. The wood carvings are particularly remarkable — intricate scenes of birds, flowers, figures, and landscapes carved with such precision that individual feathers and leaves are visible. The stone carvings feature dragons, phoenixes, and historical scenes. Today, the hall houses the Guangdong Folk Art Museum, displaying traditional crafts from across the province.
