About Paifang Street
Paifang Street is Chaozhou's most historic thoroughfare, a 1.6-kilometer pedestrian street lined with 23 ancient stone memorial archways (paifang) dating from the Ming and Qing dynasties. These archways were erected to honor scholars, officials, and virtuous citizens, each one telling a story of achievement or moral excellence.
The street preserves traditional Chaozhou architecture, with shops selling local crafts, teahouses serving Teochew tea, and restaurants offering regional specialties. The archways create a rhythmic visual pattern as you walk, while the narrow street maintains the intimate scale of old Chaozhou. At night, the archways are illuminated, creating a magical atmosphere.
